The 2023 American coming-of-age musical period drama film “The Color Purple” is directed by Blitz Bazawule, with a screenplay by Marcus Gardley. The script draws inspiration from the stage musical of the same name, itself based on Alice Walker’s 1982 novel. This cinematic adaptation marks the second rendition of Walker’s novel, with the first being the 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Spielberg and Quincy Jones. Returning as producers for the 2023 film are Spielberg and Jones, joined by Scott Sanders and Oprah Winfrey, the latter of whom also had a starring role in the 1985 film.
